The Free Speech Union of Canada (FSUC) is a non-partisan, non-profit membership organization dedicated to defending freedom of expression in Canada. Launched in February 2025, FSUC is the Canadian chapter of the Free Speech Union network founded in the United Kingdom by journalist Toby Young in 2020, with sister organizations in Australia, New Zealand, and South Africa.
FSUC defends the speech rights of individual Canadians — including regulated professionals — through legal support, public advocacy, and lobbying against anti-free-speech legislation. The organization has been particularly active in cases involving gender-critical speech, including the disciplinary proceedings against nurse Amy Hamm. Lead counsel Lisa Bildy, who defended Hamm before the BC College of Nurses and Midwives, serves on the FSUC board.
FSUC also campaigns against legislation that chills public expression, including the federal Online Harms Act, and works to educate Canadians about their free expression rights under the Charter. Membership is open to all Canadians.
